2017:

We are pleased to share that, for the fourth consecutive year, Professor Dr. Bassim H. Hameed, School of Chemica lEngineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia, has been listed in the top 1% of Engineering field for most Highly Cited Researcher 2017. The list of the Engineering field includes 176 scientists form different institutions in the world. Professor Bassim was first included in this prestige list in 2014, and has remained there since.

According to the report, released by Clarivate Analytics, the list includes more than 3,300 Highly Cited Researchers in 21 fields of the sciences and social sciences. About 10 million research articles in 11,000 academic journals were analysed and how often these articles have been cited by other researchers were counted over a period of 11 years.

Last year, Prof. Bassim was listed as one of the Most Cited Researchers for Chemical Engineering and Environmental Science & Engineering Subjects of 2016 by Shanghai Global Rankings ofAcademic Subjects.


 

To date, he has published more than 250 articles in ISI-indexed journals. He has also published 100 articles in other international and national journals and proceedings. Professor Bassim’s publications have been cited over 18,000 times (Scopus database). He has an author h-index of 73, and an i10-index of 195.

 

Professor Dr. Bassim H. Hameed received Malaysia’ Research Star Award 2017

 

Professor Dr. Bassim H. Hameed, group leader of Reaction Engineering & Adsorption (READ) research group, received Malaysia’s Research Star Award 2017. The event held on 5th October 2017 at Putrajaya International Convention Center (PICC), Putrajaya. The award recognizes his achievement as a Highly Cited Researcher according to Elsevier and Clarivate Analytics.

Professor Dr. Bassim H. Hameed, group leader of Reaction Engineering & Adsorption (READ) research group, School of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia received Universiti Sains Malaysia Chancellor's Sanggar Sanjung (Hall of Fame) Award 2016, Journal Publication Category. Prof. Dr. Bassim H. Hameed, group leader of Reaction Engineering & Adsorption (READ) research group, School of Chemical EngineeringUniversiti Sains Malaysiawas invited last Wednesday, 25th October 2017, by the Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Chemical& Bioengineering Technology (UniKL MICET), Malacca, as a speaker for one-day workshop on  “The Art of Writing Publishable Scientific Manuscripts” to share his experience with 30 lecturers and postgraduate students. The program of the workshop included six sessions; strategy and steps for publishing in top ISI-indexed journals, structure of research manuscript, how to write publishable review article, writing the first draft, selecting select the right journal for your manuscript, and dealing with reviewers’ & Editors’ comments.

 

Prof. Bassim has conducted this workshop more than 50 times so far and they were attended by more than 1,500 university lecturers, postgraduate students, and researchers from more than 45 institutions, universities, industries, and research centers from Malaysia and other countries.

 

Congratulations to Yanna Syamsuddin on a successful PhD viva

 

 READ's latest PhD graduate Yanna Syamsuddin, successfully defended her PhD on Thursday 20th April  2017.  Her thesis, entitled "Synthesis, Characterization and Catalytic Activity of CaO-based Catalysts in Transesterification of Non-edible and Waste Cooking Oils into Glycerol-free Fatty Acid Methyl Ester ", was supervised by Prof. Dr. Bassim H. Hameed.

Yanna published the following three articles in ISI-indexed journals.

Wan Zuraida Binti Wan Kamis’s graduation

Congratulations to Wan Zuraida Binti Wan Kamis who received her PhD during the April USM 2016 Convocation ceremony! Zuraida’s thesis entitled "Synthesis and characterization of mixed-oxides (Cr, W, Tu, Mn) catalysts to produce FAME from palm fatty acid distillate, non-edible and waste cooking oils.", was supervised by Prof. Dr. Bassim H. Hameed. She published three research articles in ISI-indexed journals, Journal of the Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers, Energy Conversion and Management and Bioresource Technology.

Professor Dr. Bassim H. Hameed named on the prestigious list of Thomson-Reuters Highly Cited Researchers 2014  & on the Thomson-Reuters list of “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds 2014"

 

 

                   

 

 

Professor Dr. Bassim H. Hameed has been selected by Thomson Reuters (formally ISI) into their prestigious list of Highly Cited Researchers 2014 (http://highlycited.com/), which identifies the world’s most influential contemporary researchers across 21 scientific fields. The list includes 3200 researchers. Prof. Bassim has been identified as highly cited researcher in “Engineering” field. The ranking is based on highly cited papers (HCP) in the 2003-2013 period. Highly cited papers are defined as those that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year indexed in the Web of Science. Seven of Prof. Bassim’s research articles have been identified as a highly-cited articles according to Thomson Reuters Essential Science Indicators, based on the 10-year citation data  (January 1, 2003-October 31, 2013) from Web of Science®.

Prof. Bassim has been also named in the Thomson-Reuters list of “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds 2014”. According to the Thomson-Reuters report: “These individuals are influencing the future direction of their fields, and of the world.”

To date, Prof. Bassim has published more than 250 articles in International and national journals and proceedings including 175 articles in ISI-indexed journals and more than 75% of his articles published in ISI-indexed journals ranked top 15% in the field. Prof. Bassim’s publications have been cited over 6,250 times (ISI database), with 13 having been cited more than 100 times each, and he has an author h-index of 44, his i 10-index of 118 and the average citations per article is 35.22.

READ's latest MSc graduate, Yoseef Algoufi, successfully defended his MSc on Friday 15th Nov. 2013.  His thesis, entitled "Transesterification of glycerol with dimethyl carbonate to glycerol carbonate over ash-, clay-based and stronium aluminum oxide catalysts", was supervised by Prof. Dr. Bassim H. Hameed. The thesis was successful completed in 18 months. Congratulations!

Moses Aderemi Olutoye won the best thesis of PhD award (Engineering) 2012

Moses Aderemi Olutoye won the best thesis of PhD award (Engineering) University of Science Malaysia 2012. The thesis titled “synthesis, characterization and activity of mixed oxide (Mg, Zn, al) catalysts for transesterification of waste cooking palm oil, edible and non-edible oils”, supervised by Professor Dr. Bassim H. HameedThe thesis was successful completed in 36 months and his work has already led to seven articles published in ISI-indexed journals, including Applied Catalysis A: General (Impact Factor 2012: 3.410), Fuel Processing Technology (Impact Factor 2012: 2.816) and Bioresource Technology (Impact Factor 2012: 4.750). Group Seminar

Another round of Group Seminar has already started, where Group members are presenting the results of their findings.

On 21/4/2010, the first seminar in this series was presented by Moses A. Olutoye.  He elaborated on the results of his PhD research titledDevelopment of heterogeneous catalyst for transesterification of palm oil for production of biodiesel’.  The work done so far was presented and challenges ahead were enumerated.

On April 14, 2010, Prof. Dr. Bassim H. Hameed was hosted at Universiti Teknologi Mara UiTM, Penang as a Guest Speaker at a Workshop organized for the staff on ‘The Art of Writing Publishable Scientific Manusripts’.  The Workshop which took place at Perdana Room 1, UiTM, Penang was well attended and quite successful as lecturers numbering 50 participated and were very happy at the end that the secret to their success in journal publication has been revealed.

On 12/4/2010, Farra Shaarani defended her Master’s Degree Thesis Title ‘Adsorption of Methylene Blue and 2-4, Dichlorophenol onto Modified Activated Carbins Prepared from Agricultural Waste’. Her result was quite good as she came out with minor corrections.  Congratulations Farra!!!

On 2nd April 2010, there was a Group meeting to commiserate the success of the Group for the year 2010.  During the meeting strategies for progress in the next year were enumerated and the expectations on each student were also stated.  It was also resolved that there will a seminar on forth night basis so that Researchers in the Group will be presenting their results.

A record yet to be challenged in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has been set by the Leader of Reaction Engineering and Adsorption (READ) Research Group, Prof. Dr. Bassim H. Hameed of School of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia.  On the 19th of March 2010, Universiti Sains Malaysia had a celebration to reward staff who have been in the forefront of uplifting the University’s image nationally and internationally for the year 2009.  At the Sanggar Sanjung (Hall of Fame) 2009 which was held at Hotel Equatorial, Penang on 19th March, 2009, Prof. Dr. Bassim H. Hameed was once again the first among all who were rewarded, as he received the Chancellor’s Sanggar Sanjung Awards 2009 for excellence in Journal publication category.  He published 22 ISI-indexed papers.It must be noted that apart from the fact that he won some other distinctive awards in the earlier years, he clinched to this leading position in 2008 when he received 18 awards from a similar event and was also able to sustain it in 2009.  The 22 journal publications give a cumulative impact factor of 70.678.

The long awaited Gas Chromatography (GC) was delivered to the READ Research Group last Dec. 2009, while High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was equally delivered later.  Training and commissioning of the GC and HPLC were respectively done.

August 17, 2009 was another day of interest to all the READ Research Group members as it was yet another day of rewards.  On the said day, School of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia organized an award night to reward both staff and students for their outstanding performances during the year 2009.  A record was set again as the READ Research Group Leader, Professor Dr. Bassim H. Hameed turned out to be the person who grabbed the most enviable number one position in publications with a cumulative Impact Factor of 78.  This is a position which the Group has maintained since 2008.  It must be noted that on August 7, 2008, the READ Research Group Leader, in a similar celebration was brought into the limelight in publications with cumulative factor of 56, which placed him at the position of the best Researcher in the School for 2008.  During the 2009 award night, Foo Keng Yuen and Nor Khonisah Binti Daud, members of the Group also received awards.  It was a night of joy for the Group.

Total organic carbon (TOC) analyzer was delivered to the READ Research Group on 6th August 2009, and commissioning and training took place from 20th - 28th  August 2009.  Presently, we are waiting for the READ Research Group Gas Chromatography (GC) which is on the way.

On August 1, 2009 Irish Soon Ai Ni and Chin Lip Han joined the READ Research Group as PhD students.  Their respective research topics are Heterogeneous Photo-Fenton Process for removal of dyes from wastewater and Catalytic upgrading of glycerol to chemicalsWelcome to the Group!

On June 26, 2009 Dr. Benjamin O. Aderemi completed his Post-Doctoral Programme with the Group.  His stay with the Group was brief, but remarkable and we enjoyed all his contributions to the progress of the Group, and the effects of his interactions could not be overemphasized.  Dr. Aderemi’s recent paper titled "Alum as a heterogeneous catalyst for the transesterification of palm oil" has been accepted for publication in " Applied Catalysis A: General " January 2009. The Impact Factor is 3.190. Thank you for spending your precious time with us.

 

May 2009

 

Seven Research Assistants; namely: Tan Bin Bin, Oh Chun Keat, Yeap Swee Pin, Liew Chai Chien, Meow Tzyy Ling, Siow Shing Yuen and Tai Man Chin worked with the Group during the last Semester Break that spanned from May 4, 2009 to June 30, 2009.  They were engaged on several topics as enumerated in the Research Group page.

March 24, 2009 remains historic in the mind of all members of Reaction Engineering and Adsorption (READ) Research Group of Prof. Dr. Bassim H. Hameed , School of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia, as it was a day of rewards.  Universiti Sains Malaysia organized a reward night for Staff who were deemed to be honoured for their contributions to uplift the image of the University in the year 2008.  The event tagged Sanggar Sanjung (Hall of Fame) 2008 was held at Hotel Equatorial, Penang on 24th March, 2009.  The leader of the Reaction Engineering and Adsorption Research Group, Associate Prof. Dr. Bassim H. Hameed topped the list of all who were rewarded, as he received 18 awards from the Chancellor’s Sanggar Sanjung Awards 2008 for excellence in Journal publication category.  The 18 papers which culminated to put him on the ornamental pedestal of the highest achiever in USM for the year 2008 have a Cumulative Impact Factor of 42.378.  He had previously received several awards, for instance, in 2007; he was a recipient of seven Sanggar Sanjung (Hall of Fame) Awards for publication, and three Sanggar Sanjung Awards for Research Products in 2003 and 2004.  Although always a recipient of several awards, this year’s own was with a great distinction as the awards put him in a position of a leading research person throughout the whole University.

 

 

 

 

Group Seminar

 

Recently, five members of the group presented seminars on the progress of their researches.  They are:

 

  • Abdulbari A Ahmed who discussed on his Ph.D research topic ‘Removal of dyes from textile wastewater by activated carbons prepared from biomass’ on 30/1/2009.

 

  • On the same day, Nor Khonisah Binti Daud discussed on her M.Sc. research topic ‘Development of heterogeneous catalysts for degradation of dyes using fenton-like process.

 

  • On 13/2/2009, Farra Wahida Bt. Shaarani presented a seminar on her M.Sc. research topic ‘Adsorption studies of dyes and phenols onto activated carbons prepared from agricultural solid wastes’.

 

  • On 27/2/2009, Akpan, U. George presented a seminar on his PhD research topic ‘Development of doped photocatalysts for the photocatalytic degradation of textile dyes’ .

 

  • Norhaslinda Binti Nasuha, on the same day presented seminar on her M.Sc. research topic ‘Removal of dye pollutants from industrial wastewater by non-conventional adsorbents’.

  • On the same day, Hamizura Binti Hassan presented seminar on her M.Sc. research topic ‘Degradation of textile wastewater using Fenton-like process.

 

  • On 27/03/2009, Jassem M. Salman discussed on his PhD research topic ‘Removal of pesticides from water using activated carbon prepared from agricultural wastes’.

 

  • Moses A. Olutoye, on the same day presented a seminar on his PhD research topic ‘Development of heterogeneous catalyst for transesterification of palm oil for production of biodiesel’.

 

  • Dr. Benjamin O. Aderemi presented a seminar on his post-doctoral research topic ‘Development of solid catalysts for production of biodiesel from palm oil’ on 10/04/2009.

 

  • On the same day, Wan Zuraida Binti Wan Kamis discussed on her M.Sc. research topic Development of heterogeneous catalyst for production of biodiesel from waste palm oil’.

All the seminars were counted successful.  More of such seminars are still coming as there are new developments daily in the progress of work in the group.

Dallia KH. Mahmoud successfully defended her M.Sc thesis titled ‘Agricultural by-products as low-cost adsorbents: batch adsorption of methylene blue’.  The thesis was supervised by Assoc. Salman presented a paper titled Adsorption studies of bentazon pesticide from aqueous solution using granular activated carbon at the International Conference on Sciences and Applications in Industry and Education (ICSTIE 2008) at Universiti Teknologi Mara, Penang, Malaysia.  The paper was part of his PhD work on pesticides removal. The School of Chemical Engineering at University of Science Malaysia organized a one-day short-course titled Activated carbon: Principles and Practices. The course coordinator and key speaker was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bassim H. Hameed. The second speaker was Prof. Dr. A. L. Ahmad, Dean of School of Chemical Engineering. The course covers six lectures on preparation, characterization, industrial application and regeneration of activated carbons. 17 participants from industries, universities and research centers attended the course.

Chin presented a paper titledTransesterification of palm oil for production of biodiesel using heterogeneous catalysts: Preliminary results at the 2nd USM Penang International Postgraduate Convention 2008, 18-20th Jun 2008 Penang, Malaysia. The paper was part of his M.Sc work on production of biodiesel from palm oil using heterogeneous catalysts. Well done Chin.

Professorial lecture

It is the delight of the READ Group to highlight the successful Professorial lecture of Prof. Bassim H. Hameed. The lecture took place on 15th June 2011 at Engineering Campus of USM, Nibong Tebal, Penang, Malaysia.

The title of the lecture was “Agro-Activated Carbons: low-cost, renewable and sustainable for clean environment”. Prof. Bassim, in his Lecture dwelt much on the conversion of waste to useful material. The slogan of the lecture is anchored on “Don’t Waste Waste”. Any waste can be transformed into a potentially useful material. In this delight, Prof. Bassim did justice to his lecture by taking his audience through the process by which various waste can be converted to activated carbon, a material which is very effective in the removal of pollutants from wastewater and air. A clip showing how our river waters are polluted was shown which a motivating factor to finding materials, such as activated carbon and other adsorbent which can be used in the treatment of water.
