RESEARCH OVERVIEW:

 

Overview:

Professor Dr. Bassim H. Hameed's research Group was established in 2000 in the School of Chemical Engineering at University of Science Malaysia, Malaysia with the aim of conducting research in the fields of heterogeneous catalysis applied to environmental and energy problems, biomass pyrolysis, biodiesel, production and characterization of activated carbon, application of adsorption separation process to industrial wastewater treatment and pollutant transport in the environment.

 

Todate we have successfully developed a considerable experimental facilities which has allowed us to investigate different issues related to the mentioned research fields. Laboratory scale high-pressure reactors, multi-reactors system,photocatalytic reactors, experimental setups for preparation of activated carbons, fixed-bed adsorption systems for removal of pollutants from air and water streams have been constructed. Analytical instruments such as Gas Chromatography(GC),High-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC), Total OrganicCarbon (TOC) and UV-Visible Spectrophotometer are available for analyis.

 

We have developed a wide range of catalysts for upgrading of petroleum reside oil, production of biodiesel from crude, used cooking palm oil and  non edible oil such as JatrophaCurcas and advanced oxidation processes (AOP). Removal of pollutants from air and water streams was carried out using a wide range of activated carbons, clay and agricultural by-products adsorbents. Our group has been recognized nationally and internationally in the field of preparation of activated carbons from agricultural by-products. We have produced activated carbons by chemical and physiochemical methods from coconut shell, coconut husk, palm shell, palm fibre, empty fruit bunches, rice straw, rice husk, bamboo waste, rattan waste, etc. Currently our focus is on the Preparation, characterization and evaluation of agricultural waste-based mesoporous activated carbons under microwave irradiation.

 

The expertise covers a wide range of areas including:

Professorial lecture

It is the delight of the READ Group to highlight the successful Professorial lecture of Prof. Bassim H. Hameed. The lecture took place on 15th June 2011 at Engineering Campus of USM, Nibong Tebal, Penang, Malaysia.

The title of the lecture was “Agro-Activated Carbons: low-cost, renewable and sustainable for clean environment”. Prof. Bassim, in his Lecture dwelt much on the conversion of waste to useful material. The slogan of the lecture is anchored on “Don’t Waste Waste”. Any waste can be transformed into a potentially useful material. In this delight, Prof. Bassim did justice to his lecture by taking his audience through the process by which various waste can be converted to activated carbon, a material which is very effective in the removal of pollutants from wastewater and air. A clip showing how our river waters are polluted was shown which a motivating factor to finding materials, such as activated carbon and other adsorbent which can be used in the treatment of water.
