FYP Bootcamp Strengthens Research Culture Among Undergraduates

12 November 2025 – The School of Chemical Engineering successfully hosted its first Final Year Project (FYP) Bootcamp, with full participation from final-year students and strong engagement throughout the session. The bootcamp focused on helping students refine essential research skills, covering areas like problem statement formulation, setting objectives, designing methodologies, and managing their time effectively.

A key highlight of the event was the hands-on session with postdoctoral fellows, offering students the opportunity to ask direct questions and refine their research ideas with expert guidance. The School would like to extend a special thank you to the dedicated Postdoctoral Fellows, Dr. Mohamad Firdaus Mohamad Yusop, Dr. Ibrahim Idris Enagi, Dr. Aaron Koe Zhen Yao, and Dr. Chua Mei Xia, for their time and effort in guiding the juniors through this valuable learning experience.

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many students finding the session both practical and confidence-boosting. There was also strong interest in holding similar sessions in the future, showcasing a growing desire for more structured research exposure early in their FYP journey.

This initiative supports USM’s APEX goal of cultivating a strong research culture among undergraduates, transforming the FYP from a mere course requirement into a meaningful research experience. The School of Chemical Engineering’s iFYP initiative, which connects students with industry through real-world problem-solving, continues to reinforce this objective and enhance students’ readiness for future challenges.
