Ong Jun Du, a student from the School of Chemical Engineering, USM won second place in the undergraduate category of the competition with his infographic titled the “Chemistry Behind Honey”. This infographic explores the chemistry behind the journey taken by bees in converting nectar to honey and further highlights the importance of honey for sustainable development. The sustainable development goals (SDGs) that are covered in the infographic are SDG 9 – Industry Innovation and Infrastructure and SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being. Honey might be a common food ingredient found in today’s market. However, there is a need to educate the public about the usefulness of honey and cultivate proper natural resource management practices to ensure sustainability, which is critical for bees to continue to thrive in their natural function.

“I am beyond grateful to be selected as the first runner-up of this competition for the undergraduate category. Without Dr. Masrina’s assistance and encouragement to participate in this competition, I would have missed this golden opportunity. The process of preparing this infographic enhances my reading, comprehension, and design skills, all of which are valuable to me. I hope that I will be able to participate in other similar as well as other kinds of competitions in the future.” Said Jun Du.
