1. Industrial Final Year Project (iFYP)

The iFYP program allows industries to partner with USM engineering students to work on
real-world industry challenges.

  • Key Benefits:
o Customized Solutions: Address specific business or technical issues via
    student-driven projects.
o Lab Access: Get subsidized internal rates on advanced laboratory testing
    and analysis.
o Value Creation: Convert student research into functional data, formal reports,
    or prototypes.
o Talent Pipeline: Identify and recruit high-performing graduates who are
    already familiar with your operations.
o Recognition: Shared recognition via co-authored publications.

2. Research Partnerships & Industry Grants

Companies can sponsor specific research topics (e.g., process simulation) through industry
grants lasting more than 1 year.

  • Advantages:
o Supervision by Ph.D.-qualified faculty and professional experts (over 30
specialists available spanning areas like oleochemicals, energy, water
    recovery, process optimization, and safety).
o Equipment usage within the school is charged at low internal prices.
o Student stipends are negotiable based on required onsite working hours.
o Common lab equipment and glassware are inclusive.
o Note: Costs exclude a minimum 2.5% charge from the USM Research
    Creativity and Management Office (RCMO).

3. Consultation & Specialized Services

Industries can leverage USM's expertise for targeted commercial services:

  • Scope of Services: Specific laboratory tests, process simulation, design &
    fabrication, and professional education/training.
  • Pricing & Structure:
o Costs are estimated based on expert man-hours and involvement.
o Student stipends are factored into the test/simulation pricing.
o Technician overtime is covered under external rates.
o Note: Final pricing excludes USAINS (12%), USM (8%), and Service Tax
    (SST 6%).

4. Legal Framework & Agreements

All partnerships are formalized via official USM channels through the ICNIS online system.
Agreements are ultimately signed by the Vice-Chancellor (VC) and witnessed by the Dean.
Available templates include:

  •  Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) & Memorandum of Agreement (MOA)
  • Collaboration & Research Collaboration Agreements
  • Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDA) – Short, Mutual, and USM versions
  • Intellectual Property (IP) Rights Sale and Endowment Agreements

5. Extended Benefits

  • Pathways to postgraduate studies and lecturer attachments.
  • Community-driven projects and government-backed technology development funding
    (e.g., MOSTI eDana).
  • ]Joint IP sharing schemes and eligible double tax exemptions for the industry
    partner.
