USM Chemical Engineering Students Won Several Prizes at NACES 2022


The annual event of the National Chemical Engineering Symposium 2022 (NACES 2022) was held at Universiti Teknologi Mara, at Shah Alam, from 22nd to 24th November 2022. This year theme is “Elucidating Salient Sustainable Pillars in Technological Advancement”. The chemical engineering students of USM competed in six categories Infographic Competition, Technical Presentation Competition, Technical Case Study Competition, Technical Essay Writing Competition, Technical Video Competition and Plant Design Competition. Their achievements were outstanding by winning several prizes.

Young chemical engineers from USM won first and second place in the infographic competition where they received RM 300 and RM 200 respectively. The first place was won by Ong Jun Du (3rd Year) with an infographic entitled “Smart Agriculture Revolution & Sustainability”. Meanwhile, Desmond Tang See Keng (4th Year) won second place with an infographic entitled “Graphene-Based Lithium-Ion Battery in Electrical Vehicles”.

The USM team also won first place in the Technical Video Competition where the winner receive a monetary prize of RM 600. This category was participated by 2nd Year chemical engineering students: Leong Jing Xiang, Ang Zin Qing and Sri Sakthiswaran A/L Chandramogan. Meanwhile, in the Plant Design Competition, a team of 4th year students won second place and received RM 600. This achievement was a surprised since USM didn’t participate in this category for the past few years. The team members are Tan Kian Seng, Lim De Yuan, Ang Teik Lin and Chew Kai Xing. They presented plant design report on the production of dimethyl ether from carbon dioxide.

In the Technical Case Study Competition, a team consisting of 3rd-year students won third place. This year's competition was carried out in a single round where the participants require to propose the conversion of inundation waste to value-added products. The team members are Rachel Cheah Xin Ying, Boey Jia Le and Lee Chee Meng, they receive RM 300 as a reward.

The School of Chemical Engineering USM would like to congratulate to the winners and USM NACES 2022 team for their remarkable achievement and efforts. In total, they received RM 2000 as a reward for their success. We believe they gained valuable experience from the symposium. We wish them more success in next year's symposium which shall be hosted by the Universiti Malaya.
