Strengthening and Synergising Team Spirit Among Chemical Engineering Students
18 April 2026 – The School of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia recently organised a dynamic team-building programme at the White Resort Camp, Balik Pulau, Penang, bringing together 105 first-year students in a full-day outdoor engagement.
The activity started at 7.30 am and lasts until 4.30 pm, was carefully designed to complement academic learning with experiential activities that foster teamwork, communication, and leadership; essential attributes for future engineers.
Engaging Activities to Build Team Cohesion
Participants were grouped into teams and challenged through a series of physical and mental activities that required coordination, strategy, and resilience. Among the key activities conducted were:
- A-Frame and obstacle trail, which tested coordination and trust among team members
- Leaked container and high tower challenges, requiring problem-solving and innovative thinking under constraints
- Treasure hunt, encouraging strategic planning and teamwork
- Capture the flag, promoting agility, leadership, and competitive spirit
Each activity was structured to simulate real-world engineering scenarios, where collaboration and effective communication are critical to achieving common goals.

Developing Essential Soft Skills
The programme emphasised the importance of teamwork and collective problem-solving, as students were required to work closely under time pressure and challenging conditions. Through these exercises, participants developed stronger communication skills, learning to express ideas clearly and make decisions collaboratively.
In addition, the activities encouraged students to think critically and respond effectively to unexpected challenges; skills that are vital not only in academic settings but also in professional engineering environments.

Fostering Relationships and Leadership
Beyond skill development, the programme played a significant role in breaking social barriers among first-year students. By working together in diverse teams, participants were able to build new friendships and social networks, creating a supportive community that extends beyond the classroom.
Leadership qualities were also cultivated throughout the programme, as students took on roles within their teams to coordinate tasks and guide their peers. At the same time, emphasis was placed on self-discipline and time management, reinforcing the importance of responsibility and accountability in achieving success.
