Strengthening Regional Research Networks: Indonesian Delegation Explores Collaborative Opportunities with USM’s Chemical Engineering

9 June 2026 – The School of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), welcomed a delegation of researchers from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia, for a research visit aimed at strengthening academic partnerships and exploring new opportunities for collaborative research.

Held from at 10.00 am at the School’s Meeting Room, the visit brought together researchers, academic staff, and students in a productive exchange of ideas and expertise. The delegation comprised of Professor Budi Mulyanti, Professor Tri Suciati, Professor Lilik Hasanah, Dr. Roer Eka Pawinanto, and Mr. Wira Hadikusuma, accompanied by three internship students from Institut Teknologi Bandung who are currently undertaking research attachments at the School of Chemical Engineering, USM.

The discussion session was led by Ir. Dr.-Ing. Noorashrina Binti A Hamid, together with several academic staff members from the School of Chemical Engineering, including Professor Ooi Boon Seng, Ir. Dr. Nur Ayshah Rosli, Associate Professor Dr. Masrina Mohd Nadzir, Associate Professor Dr. Khairiah Abd. Karim, and Dr. Fadzil Noor Gonawan.

The visit was organised with several key objectives, namely, to strengthen existing academic and research collaborations between the School of Chemical Engineering and its Indonesian counterparts, to explore potential new research initiatives and knowledge-sharing opportunities, and to further enhance student mobility and research attachment programmes among the three institutions.

During the meeting, both parties discussed areas of mutual research interest and exchanged views on future collaborative projects that could leverage the expertise and facilities available at each institution. The session also provided an opportunity for the visiting researchers and students to gain deeper insights into the research culture and academic environment at USM.

As part of the programme, the delegation toured several laboratories within the School of Chemical Engineering, where they were introduced to the School’s research facilities and ongoing projects. The visit continued with a tour of the Science and Engineering Research Centre (SERC) at the Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Engineering Campus, providing the visitors with a broader overview of USM’s advanced research infrastructure and capabilities.

 The visit reflects the School’s commitment to fostering international academic partnerships and promoting cross-border research collaboration within the ASEAN region. Through continued engagement with leading institutions such as UPI and ITB, the School of Chemical Engineering aims to expand opportunities for joint research, talent development, and knowledge exchange, contributing to the advancement of science, engineering, and innovation at both regional and global levels.
