Shinshu University Professor Shares Research Insights and Graduate Study Opportunities with USM Community
9 June 2026 – The School of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), had the privilege of hosting Professor Makoto Ogawa from the Institute for Aqua Regeneration, Shinshu University, Japan, for a seminar and academic engagement session aimed at strengthening research collaboration and promoting postgraduate study opportunities.
Held from 11.00 am. to 1.00 pm. at the School’s Seminar Room, the visit brought together undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and academic staff for an enriching exchange of knowledge and ideas.
Exploring Future Research Collaborations
Prior to the seminar, Professor Ogawa met with the Dean of the School of Chemical Engineering, Professor Ir. Dr. Zainal Ahmad, and the Deputy Dean (Research and Postgraduate Studies), Associate Professor Dr. Vel Murugan Vadivelu.
The discussion focused on potential opportunities for future collaboration between USM and Shinshu University, particularly in the areas of research attachments, academic exchanges, and joint research initiatives. Both parties expressed interest in strengthening institutional ties and exploring avenues for greater mobility among students and researchers.
The meeting further reinforced the growing relationship between the School of Chemical Engineering and Shinshu University, building upon previous engagements between the two institutions.
Graduate Study and Scholarship Opportunities at Shinshu University
One of the highlights of the visit was a seminar delivered by Professor Ogawa on graduate study and scholarship opportunities at Shinshu University.
Attended by approximately 40 participants, including undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and faculty members, the session provided valuable insights into postgraduate education pathways in Japan. Participants were introduced to the academic environment at Shinshu University, available research programmes, and scholarship opportunities for international students.
The seminar also allowed students to gain a better understanding of the benefits of pursuing postgraduate studies abroad and the opportunities available through international academic collaboration.
Advancing Research Through Nanospace Materials
In addition to discussing postgraduate opportunities, Professor Ogawa delivered an engaging research lecture entitled “Nanospace Materials as Platforms for Hybrids and Biohybrids for Versatile Applications.”
The presentation highlighted recent developments in nanospace materials and their applications in creating advanced hybrid and biohybrid systems. Participants were exposed to cutting-edge research concepts and innovative approaches that have potential applications across various scientific and engineering disciplines.
The seminar generated active discussions among students and researchers, providing a valuable platform for intellectual exchange and the sharing of research expertise.
