Empowering Young Minds: PPKK’s STEM Outreach Inspires Standard 4 & 5 Students

Interactive science took center stage at SK Methodist Parit Buntar today as Standard 4 and Standard 5 students participated in a dynamic STEM Outreach Program. Running from 10 AM to 1 PM, the initiative was led by staff and postgraduate students from PPKK, aiming to bring complex scientific concepts to life through engaging, hands-on activities.

The students were exposed to two main activities based on practical science applications: a DIY water filtration system (Muddy to Marvelous) and a volcanic eruption simulation (Lava Experiment). During the first session, students were guided to build a simple water filtration device using recycled and natural materials, giving them a practical understanding of physical filtration processes and the importance of clean water. Through the Lava Experiment, which utilized a mixture of acetic acid (vinegar) and sodium bicarbonate, the students witnessed firsthand the rapid chemical reaction that produces carbon dioxide gas. The program also featured a special visit from the Vice-Chancellor of USM, Prof. Ir. Dato' Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed.

The program received an overwhelming response from the participating students and the school administration. These interactive, play-based learning approaches continue to prove highly effective in stimulating critical thinking and scientific curiosity.
